Okay now you've gone too far...

I think these discussions are good to have, and everyone IS entitled to their own opinion.

Like I sad, I don;t particularly like what he does..but I get it...but I also know it's not for me.

I also get what you're saying..hell I even posted something the other day about how I'm tired of people using pop culture references in art (especially star wars) :trooper:

I guess I'm a pacifist..but I think there is room enough for everyone to play, and if Lucas WANTED to stop Sucklord...he would have..but it only helps the Lucas image to have some "hip" artist doing derivative work to help keep the brand "cool".

I realize that I played right into the 'elicit strong reaction' art angle when my opening post claimed he was a hack, but I hope my follow ups clarified things. :)

I think I've been perfectly clear as to the 'why' aspect of not liking his stuff, but hey, I can't fault anyone for making a living. It's obvious that he appeals to some people, so yeah, there's room for everyone to play. The most obvious way you either like or don't like someone's particular art is by whether you're a patron and buy their stuff.

And didja see how through my argument I actually heaped the praise on folks like the CP artists here? Didja? Didja? Cuz I did. :bravo:

What snake-oil pitch? "You're an asshole for buying this"?

He's pretty upfront about everything.

As far as bootlegging skelves etc. You're not perceiving the whole Suckadelic idea. The universe centers around sci-fi, cartoons etc. and re-packaging those ideas, feelings and associations into a humorous figure for fans of those genres.

You also come off as incredibly bitter when you say that you're active in several casting and modeling forums or whatever and then take shots at the customer base like you are upset they aren't buying your stuff because they are too stupid or gullible.

I have a fairly sizeable Suckadelic collection as well as a fine art collection. I don't think a Suckadelic collection earns me any hipster points but it does make me laugh when I read the backs of the figures or smile when I know which pieces came from what action figure I played with as a kid.

Some of it is also hilariously relevant. I'll post some card backs later.

Bad example, but has everyone seen the old Seinfeld episode where George has 'Opposite Day' and does everything the exact opposite of what he'd normally do and it all works out for him? SL's approach (marketing) if you will is pretty much the embodiment of this. Saying "You're an asshole for buying this" is a fairly transparent way of saying "Please buy my stuff".

I think I perceive it pretty accurately. (I am also a HUGE geek and fan of the properties he's 'inspired' by)

That's a double whammy with a false perception AND assumption, and you know what happens when you assume. :tsktsktsk: ;)

Aren't the toys just the chosen vehicle for his satirical humor? I can see how he could be irritating to art purists, but his art is really in the parody, not the production values of the toys themselves.

Haha. I almost wrote you know what happens when you assume too in my original post but didn't.

I'm not assuming anything. I don't know you or what you do. I was just saying that it came off that way.

You seem like a nice enough guy. It wasn't a personal slight.

I was just responding to the fact that you can't lump an entire fanbase into one category. It's like comparing CP fans to flippers that buy things at conventions. People buy for different reasons and motivations.

hahaha, I read the article and saw how relvent his quote was in the article.

Quote:
"I'm sort of an oddity in the toy world,” he concurs. “There are some people who worship me like a God and other people who can't see past the crappy exterior and think I might be a hack. And I might be a hack."

Fair enough.

And I am a nice enough girl. :)

No harm no foul!

Morgan has put in a lot of effort to build his brand from nothing. I, for one, have always thought what he was doing was funny and entertaining. For a self made man...I'd say what he's been able to accomplish is pretty damned impressive...I mean the guy lived with his mom until a few years ago. I was in his studio last year when he was getting his 2nd call back for an audition for the "Work of Art" show, and the first thing I thought was "dude is MADE for television, it's about time". We all knew he would get it.

Talk shit about him all you want, it's what he wants you to do anyway.

I'm not into WHAT he is doing, but I totally applaud HOW he has managed to do it. It's always great to see a success story for me...especially to someone who is so close to our industry.

Well said! :bravo:

I've known about his toys for awhile but paid no attention to him, not that I disliked him just not my style. It wasn't until I heard him speak on Toy Break that I started paying attention - the guy is hilarious - I love his tell it like it is attitude and his whole over the top persona is fun to watch. His rise from nothing is a great inspiration, I look forward to seeing him on Work of Art!

Totally agreed. Same here about paying no attention to him previously.

He freakin cracks me up.

And the kiss on the helmet totally makes that image.

I think this thread only reinforces what Suckadelic has set out to do. I don't own any of his work, but I think what he is doing is great. It's not about the toys people...
