I just had the longest conversation with a friend about this project.
Personally, I feel that it somehow strips all the charm out of the kid drawings. I get the concept, but it feels like applying a Photoshop filter to something. He argued that it's a very encouraging feedback mechanism for a kid to see their drawings rendered this way, which I guess is true? I don't know - neither of us have kids! I think it feels cold.
Conversely, I found this similar project (http://www.yeondoojung.com/artworks_vie ... .php?no=88) really amazing and sweet, probably because it feels like a reinvention of the *ideas* in the drawing, rather than a literal interpretation of what's on paper.

But those are painted "realistic" by the child who painted it.

now THAT project I think is great and actually does bring the child's work to life while leaving it as is.

I agree, but if you just saw the monsters alone it really makes them feel unique. There is too much rehashing of similar creatures and I like that they are not influenced by past drawn creatures.

I think it's interesting, A while back I started doing a few 3 dimensional fabric sculptures based on kids drawings. People were interested, but they took far too long to make. 3 years later some kids are still asking when their drawing will be made....
Oh, I'm not disputing the uniqueness of the monsters! That's all in the kids' drawings, which are awesome. I just didn't think that rendering them added anything.
I don't think "reinterpreting" drawigns is a bad thing at all, but I think this particular execution just loses a lot of ...earnestness? I'm not really sure what the word I'm looking for is.

I like the idea of the photos and sethsabbat creating fabric sculpture because that is a reinterpretation of the original work. For me personally turning them into graphic art is saying, here's a better looking version of the same thing. Which I find slightly insulting towards a child LOL
