It was on Boing Boing earlier http://www.boingboing.net/2010/07/14/mr ... g+Boing%29she says it was just for a design/craft swap Quote: Sarah sez, "I participated in a design/craft swap. I was given 'an old toy' as a material and 'steampunk' as a theme to start. So, I bought a 10 dollar old-school Mr. Potato Head and used objects found around the house to make Spudnik. Then, I made a capsule/telescope that would hold documents that tell the story of Spudnik and his crucial role in saving the spirit of humanity from apocalyptic doom. I had a lot of fun making this, so I thought I'd share."

This is a little ridiculous. I usually hate these witch hunts and I think some people are a little too quick to say X person is a ripoff of Y person and I know styles can be similar but come on, this is Dok's unique style. I don't even mind when people use the round green eye's because you can argue that is generic steam-punk, but when you pair that with a mustache and any sort of formal wear that can only be Dok.

Return To OZ (1985) I honestly dont see the point, in pointing fingers... beating a dead horse... IMHO (although the rustedhalo fig. was TOO blatent) P.S. i'm a huge fan of Dok A and have a number of his figures commence flaming

I actually wanted to ask, where is the line drawn? I was looking through some sketchbooks from about the time I discovered steampunk and long before I'd ever seen any of Dok's stuff, and I have several little doodles of robot men with mustaches and bowties and top hats and monocles. Some of it is surprisingly similar, not in style, but perhaps in content. I mean, I could have easily been influenced by Return to Oz - one of my favorite movies as a kid. I mean, can I never draw a robot with a mustache again without being called out if I decide to show it off?
Now, I never have any intention of trying to make a living from my art, but what if I did? I'm just curious what everyone else here thinks.

I think that the scene you are trying to get into with your art plays a big part. Yes, there are certainly common visual aspects of steampunk art, but if you are looking to do steampunk in, for example, the art toy world you should be aware (or make yourself aware) of the artists who are already doing that style in that particular scene.
